Bachelor of Laws in Austrian Law

Admission to the Bachelor of Law degree programme requires a university entrance qualification (Abitur, Matura, Berufsreife) and German level C1.
There is no entrance test or entrance examination for the Bachelor’s degree programme in Law.

Recognition / Credits
Examination achievements that have already been completed can be recognised if they are included in the SFU curriculum. The tuition fees are reduced by credit transfers. You are welcome to attend courses that have already been recognised in order to refresh your knowledge. Recognition is carried out in accordance with § 78 para. 1 and para. 3 UG 2002.

The Bachelor of Law programme has a strong practical orientation. The curriculum includes a mandatory internship, which serves to link the content taught in the course and real cases experienced by the students themselves. Furthermore, many practitioners are active as course instructors, who also impart technical and scientific knowledge to the students from a practical perspective.
The range of courses includes exercises on drafting pleadings and contracts as well as on methodology and case resolution. In general, the teaching of the technical-scientific content is user-based. Furthermore, students are taught social and communicative skills in addition to technical-scientific skills. Another core element of the teaching model in the Bachelor of Law programme is the combination of research and teaching. Most of the lecturers conduct their own academic research and publications, and the permanent academic staff is also active in both teaching and research. This enables the involvement of current research content and research projects in teaching.

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Law offers you a basic education in law. As a lawyer, you will already have access to a range of fields of work in the public and private sectors. You also have the option of continuing with a Master’s degree programme in law, which gives you access to regulated legal professions.

If you are already working, the LL.B. degree will enable you to improve your career prospects and gain the advantage of further professional development. The degree programme offers a combination of different types of courses, some of which take place online where appropriate. Courses with attendance times allow you to exchange ideas with lecturers and fellow students as well as experience traditional student life. In lectures where attendance is not compulsory, you decide whether to attend or to work through the content yourself using the textbooks and the support provided by the documents on our e-learning platform.

Qualification goals

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Laws programme, students possess advanced skills that demonstrate mastery of the subject of law as well as the ability to innovate in the field. They are qualified to solve complex and unpredictable legal issues. The bachelor’s degree in law enables admission to a master’s degree programme in law.

Competencies

Professional jurisprudential competences
Within the framework of the Bachelor of Law programme, students learn basic legal terminology, theories and systematics. In addition to these basic skills and the study of central regulations in the individual sub-disciplines, the focus and the special feature of the specialized scientific training is the practice of a confident handling of the methods of jurisprudence. The acquired methodical understanding enables the students to quickly gain an overview of previously unknown legal regulations and to solve a variety of problems with confidence. In addition, students are taught an interdisciplinary and international approach to solving legal problems. Students are shown that other legal systems may have to be taken into account when solving legal questions.
In addition, students learn to view national regulations in a cross-border context and to compare them with other regulatory approaches. Students will be qualified to understand and consider an international background of a provision, such as a Union law motivation of a provision or a recommendation of an international organization. Students are also introduced to an interdisciplinary approach to the application of law and an openness to other disciplines.

Personal and social skills
Students of the Bachelor of Law programme experience systematic training for complex relational and interactional situations in the module “Social Requirements and Communicative Strategies”. As such, graduates of SFU should also have a deeper understanding in these areas in the field of law in order to be able to defuse these conflicts through better empathy for communicative and social dynamics of a situation, through the strategies learned and on a communicative level. To this end, students will be especially qualified to deal with everyday conflict situations. The ability to reflect on one’s own role in these professional situations and to perceive oneself in context forms the basis for successful interaction with others. Practical training units (role plays, small groups, case work, scenarios and simulations) provide students with a basic understanding of self-reflection and self-awareness.

Professional requirements
Various fields of employment for lawyers, in particular the civil service, but also work for social insurance companies, interest groups and in the private sector, are open to graduates with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. Companies now differentiate in their job offers according to whether a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree is required for the job. The shorter duration of training within the framework of a Bachelor of Laws degree programme compared to traditional degree programmes makes it possible to start a career quickly.
With regard to the Bachelor of Law degree programme, access to the regulated legal professions is possible only after completion of the Master of Laws programme.

Costs
The total tuition fees are limited with the number of semesters of the standard duration of studies (baccalaureate: 6).
An extension of the studies by 1 year does not increase the total cost of the studies.
Costs: Euro 9.045,-/semester
Tuition fees are due at the beginning of each semester, upon receipt of invoice.

Tax deductibility
If the course of study constitutes a further education measure or a retraining measure, the tuition fees can be claimed under the Income Tax Act.
The entire tuition fees are then tax deductible.
